Internet Communities The most exciting part of allthat has come about through the internet is the way people are able to communicate with one another. Today we will look at some of the ways in which you can use the internet to communicate with your students, your peers, and the world. We will explore all of these technologies listed below as a means of academic interaction and communication. Weblogs - An excellent way to journal online. Students can share ideas and perceptions with one another. Wikis Collaborative writing online. Teachers can assign a topic to be explored and have their students work in groups to define and expand upon various aspects of the topic. Instant Messaging(IM) Students and teachers can communicate online after school hours regarding assignments. The class could invite a guest speaker to confrence with them remotely regarding a topic of interest. FileTransfer Protocol (FTP) A method for transfering large files securly. An excelent way to have students hand in the assignments from home or to distribute date to students. Really Simple Syndication (RSS) Feeds from an important resource can be monitored. A good way for students to stay informed on important topics. Podcasts Sound files that are being produced by all sorts of experts. Producing a monthly podcast would be a great class project. e-Mail An effective way to stay in touch with students and parents. Blog Prompts
